Nobody’s idea of a hit.But here’s what almost nobody notices about that record. “I’m Completely Satisfied With You” was never a father-daughter song at all; it’s two lovers talking to each other. Which means the first thing you hear George sing on it, to his own daughter, four years after they buried him, is a line she then had to stand there and answer.

THE LAST SONG GLEN CAMPBELL EVER RECORDED DIDN’T START AS A SONG. HE SAID IT OUT LOUD ON A BAD DAY, AND MEANT NOTHING BY IT. Glen told the world about the Alzheimer’s in 2011. In January 2013, he walked into a Los Angeles studio for what turned out to be the last song he would ever record: “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” written with his producer, Julian Raymond. It took four takes, all in a single day. Behind him played the Wrecking Crew — the same session musicians he had once been one of, back when nobody outside Hollywood knew his name. Everybody remembers the title. Almost nobody knows where it came from. It wasn’t built in a writing room. It came out of Glen’s own mouth on an afternoon when he’d spent hours answering questions about the disease and had said very little about any of it. Then he wandered over to Raymond and summed the whole thing up in one offhand sentence, the kind of remark you’d forget by supper. Raymond didn’t forget it. He’d been quietly writing down the things Glen said for a while by then. And what Kim Campbell hears in that title is not what the rest of us hear at all.

The next morning, Grant Turner went on WSM Radio and began with the hardest words of his thirty-year career. Thousands poured into Winchester, Virginia for the funeral. The maroon hearse wound five miles to Shenandoah Cemetery while people lined the road with bowed heads, men removing their hats. There were enough flowers at the grave to ransom a queen. One pallbearer told reporters: “Patsy was like a religion with them.” And when the final benediction ended, the crowd surged forward, snatching every bloom they could reach from beside the gold coffin — desperate for something, anything, to hold onto. Today, a bell tower at her resting place still chimes every evening at six o’clock — the very hour she left this world.
