LORETTA LYNN WAS 37, A MOTHER OF SIX, AND NEARLY A DECADE INTO HER RUN ON THE COUNTRY CHARTS THE DAY SHE SAT DOWN TO WRITE “COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER.” She wrote it at home, in 1969, wrestling with stubborn rhymes — holler, daughter, water — line by line, melody and words arriving together. It took a few hours. When she was done, she had nine verses. Married at 15. Four kids before she was 20. And now she was writing a song about her father — a coal miner who came home black with dust, who died of a stroke in 1959 at the age of 52, ten years before she ever picked up a pen to write the first line. He never heard it. Her producer, Owen Bradley, listened to all nine verses and told her to cut some. A single couldn’t run that long. Lynn agreed. She cut three or four verses, left them behind in the studio, and they were lost for good. She later said she wished she hadn’t. What remained was enough. The verse about her mother reading the Bible by coal-oil light. The line about washing clothes in the creek. The cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler. The session took place at Bradley’s Barn in 1970. The song was released that October and hit number one on the country chart in December. Lynn wrote about a world that no longer existed — about a father who had been dead a decade, about a childhood she had long since left behind — and laid it down in three minutes that her producer didn’t think anyone would want to hear. She was right. He was wrong. The song became the title of her 1976 autobiography, and of the 1980 film that won Sissy Spacek an Oscar. The question isn’t whether she rescued her father’s memory. The question is why, ten years after he was gone, she still needed to write it down.

THE LAST SONG PATSY CLINE EVER RECORDED — FEBRUARY 7, 1963 — TWENTY-SIX DAYS BEFORE THE PLANE WENT DOWN “If anything ever happens to me, promise you’ll take care of my babies.” That’s what Patsy told Dottie West in the weeks before. Nobody understood why she kept saying it. On February 7, 1963, Patsy walked into Bradley Studio in Nashville and recorded “Faded Love.” On the final take, her voice cracked on the word “love.” Owen Bradley wanted another take. Patsy said leave it. She was thirty years old. She had two children. She had survived a near-fatal car crash in 1961 and walked back onto the Opry stage on crutches. Randy Travis was home that week recovering from laryngitis — a rare thing in a life spent eight months a year on the road. The tornado that came through middle Tennessee on April 16, 1998 took the roof off his neighbor’s house. The Pickerings, an elderly couple, had lived there since before Randy was born in Marshville. He heard the sirens, then heard the freight-train sound, then heard nothing. When he went outside, the Pickerings’ second floor was gone and Mrs. Pickering was screaming for her husband from under what used to be the staircase. Randy lifted beams off the old man for forty minutes before paramedics could get up the road. Mr. Pickering had a collapsed lung and a broken pelvis and lived another eleven years because of it. The Tennessean ran a tiny item about it on page B7. Randy refused an interview. The only thing he said, to a deputy who asked if he was alright, was: “I sing for a living. I oughta be able to lift a porch beam.” Mrs. Pickering kept the cassette of Storms of Life by her bed until she died in 2004. Played the title track at her funeral.

Glen Campbell was losing his memory when he recorded a song that began with something he could still remember clearly — the $5 guitar his grandfather gave him as a boy. He tried several nonmusical jobs before heading to Nashville for another chance. That was where Cowboy Jack Clement entered the story. Clement signed Williams to his publishing company as a songwriter. Don began recording simple demos with Clement and producer Allen Reynolds, hoping other singers would cut his songs. But other artists weren’t interested enough. So Clement, Reynolds and Williams made a simple decision: if nobody else wanted to record the songs, Don would sing them himself. That decision changed everything. “The Shelter of Your Eyes” reached No. 14. “Come Early Morning” climbed to No. 12. Then “We Should Be Together” became his first Top Five country hit. In 1974, “I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me” gave Williams his first No. 1. He would eventually collect 17 No. 1 country hits. But Don Williams’ solo career began almost by accident — because the songs he was trying to give away ended up sounding better in the quiet voice singing the demos.
