LAST OCTOBER, ANNE MURRAY WALKED OUT AT THE GRAND OLE OPRY, HEARD THE ROOM ROAR, AND ASKED WHO THEY WERE CHEERING FOR. She was 80 and had been retired since 2008. The Opry had built the entire night around her, an all-star tribute called The Music of My Life, and it still took her a beat to understand the noise was hers. “I’ve been out of the limelight for so long,” she told NPR. The room had its reasons: 55 million albums, the first Canadian woman to top the American charts, the first woman to win Album of the Year at the CMAs. Céline Dion sang “When I Fall in Love” at her side on a 1996 television special. Shania Twain took “You Needed Me” and k.d. lang took “A Love Song” for Anne’s 2007 Duets record, and both came back for the 2021 documentary Full Circle to explain what she had meant to them. Ask Anne, though, and forty years shrink to almost nothing. She told PEOPLE she just had “a hit record every now and then, and just quietly went home to Canada.” She never called herself a pioneer. A room full of people spent a whole night in Nashville doing it for her.

BILL LANGSTROTH DIED IN A MONCTON HOSPITAL IN MAY 2013, AND THE WOMAN HE HAD DIVORCED FIFTEEN YEARS EARLIER WAS STILL HIS FRIEND. He was 81. Most of the world knew him as Anne Murray’s husband; before that he had a career of his own, co-hosting and producing CBC’s Singalong Jubilee, the show where he called her back for a second audition. Their affair began in 1968, when he was married with two small children, nearly fifteen years older, and her boss. She has written that she fell fast and could not stop it. They hid it for seven years and married on June 20, 1975, her thirtieth birthday. Then the career took over. Will in 1976, Dawn in 1979, and a mother gone for months while Bill held the house together in Nova Scotia. She wrote about the terrible guilt and loneliness of being away from her two young children — and, harder still, that Bill gave up a good career for her and became exactly what she had once predicted a touring performer’s husband becomes: “Mr. Anne Murray.” They separated three months short of their twenty-third anniversary. He got sober through AA and stayed sober the rest of his life, met his third wife Frances at a watercolour class in Maine, and in 2011 went into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame under his own name. The records kept selling. The years never came back. The friendship did.

THE LAST SONG GLEN CAMPBELL EVER RECORDED DIDN’T START AS A SONG. HE SAID IT OUT LOUD ON A BAD DAY, AND MEANT NOTHING BY IT. Glen told the world about the Alzheimer’s in 2011. In January 2013, he walked into a Los Angeles studio for what turned out to be the last song he would ever record: “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” written with his producer, Julian Raymond. It took four takes, all in a single day. Behind him played the Wrecking Crew — the same session musicians he had once been one of, back when nobody outside Hollywood knew his name. Everybody remembers the title. Almost nobody knows where it came from. It wasn’t built in a writing room. It came out of Glen’s own mouth on an afternoon when he’d spent hours answering questions about the disease and had said very little about any of it. Then he wandered over to Raymond and summed the whole thing up in one offhand sentence, the kind of remark you’d forget by supper. Raymond didn’t forget it. He’d been quietly writing down the things Glen said for a while by then. And what Kim Campbell hears in that title is not what the rest of us hear at all.

WHEN PATSY CLINE’S PLANE HIT THE WOODS OUTSIDE CAMDEN ON A TUESDAY EVENING IN MARCH 1963, HER SILVER WRISTWATCH STOPPED AT 6:20. SHE WAS THIRTY YEARS OLD, AND “LEAVIN’ ON YOUR MIND” WAS STILL ON THE CHARTS. Her body was brought home to her dream house one last time before the memorial, just as she had wished. Glen Campbell was losing his memory when he recorded a song that began with something he could still remember clearly — the $5 guitar his grandfather gave him as a boy. Decades earlier, Glen had told his longtime friend and musician Carl Jackson about growing up in Arkansas. His grandfather taught him “In the Pines” on a $5 Sears & Roebuck guitar. Carl never forgot the story. Sometime in the 1970s, he wrote “Arkansas Farmboy,” a song about Glen’s journey from rural Arkansas to worldwide fame. Nearly 40 years later, the song came back to Glen. After his Alzheimer’s diagnosis and Goodbye Tour, Glen entered the studio for what would become his final album, Adiós. His ability to remember songs was already declining, but he recorded “Arkansas Farmboy” in the first person — singing words Carl had written about his life all those years before. Carl later said hearing Glen sing it gave him chills. The little boy who once learned a song on a $5 guitar had become one of the most famous voices in country music. And near the end, when so many memories were becoming harder to hold onto, Glen returned to the place where his story had begun.

Before Don Williams became the “Gentle Giant,” his successful group had broken up, he had taken jobs outside music, and he wasn’t even sure he was meant to be a solo star. The Pozo-Seco Singers had given Williams his first taste of success in the 1960s. But after the group fell apart, the future became uncertain. He tried several nonmusical jobs before heading to Nashville for another chance. That was where Cowboy Jack Clement entered the story. Clement signed Williams to his publishing company as a songwriter. Don began recording simple demos with Clement and producer Allen Reynolds, hoping other singers would cut his songs. But other artists weren’t interested enough. So Clement, Reynolds and Williams made a simple decision: if nobody else wanted to record the songs, Don would sing them himself. That decision changed everything. “The Shelter of Your Eyes” reached No. 14. “Come Early Morning” climbed to No. 12. Then “We Should Be Together” became his first Top Five country hit. In 1974, “I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me” gave Williams his first No. 1. He would eventually collect 17 No. 1 country hits. But Don Williams’ solo career began almost by accident — because the songs he was trying to give away ended up sounding better in the quiet voice singing the demos.
