In August 1930, Hank was working aboard a fishing schooner off Nova Scotia. He had gone to sea at 12, escaping poverty and an abusive home. Then a violent gale seized the boat and pushed it toward Sable Island, a place feared for the ships already buried around its shores. Hank later recalled that they were about 14 miles away when the wind suddenly shifted. He believed God had spared them. When Hank reached land at Canso, he learned that six other vessels had been lost and 132 men had died in the same storm. He made himself a promise: “No more fishing trips for me.” Hank returned to hard jobs on land. He sold fish, unloaded ships and cut timber. But he kept playing the guitar he had bought with money earned at sea. The ocean nearly ended Hank Snow’s life. Instead, it closed one road and left him free to follow the music.
