By 1982, country radio had quietly let go of Johnny Rodriguez. That year his two singles stopped at No. 66 and No. 89. Six No. 1 records behind him, and the phone wasn’t ringing much anymore. Then somebody handed him a song called “Foolin’.” It’s a small, plain song. A man admits he was lying when he swore he’d love her forever — then finds out he’s the one who can’t walk away. No big arrangement. Just a voice that already knows it lost the argument. But the strange part isn’t that it worked. It’s who wrote it. Ralph Mooney. Not a Nashville songwriter — a steel guitar player. Waylon Jennings’ steel man for twenty years. Back in 1949, after his wife walked out over his drinking, he sat down alone and wrote “Crazy Arms” in a few minutes. Thirty-four years later, another Mooney song put Johnny Rodriguez back at No. 4 on the country chart. His first Top 5 since 1977. It was also nearly his last.

LORETTA LYNN RECORDED A SONG MARTY ROBBINS WROTE. ELEVEN DAYS LATER, THEY WERE STANDING ON NBC TOGETHER. It was past midnight on August 24, 1973. NBC handed The Midnight Special — a show built for rock and pop crowds — over to country music for a full 90 minutes. Loretta Lynn and Marty Robbins hosted it together. They opened the show side by side, then handled nearly every introduction that night, teasing each other between acts like two people who’d been doing this for years. They hadn’t. Look for their other work together, before or after, and there’s almost nothing. No duet record. No tour. This was pretty much all of it. Which makes the song they sang together that night — “Singin’ the Blues” — sit a little differently now. Eleven days before the broadcast, Loretta had released Love Is the Foundation. Track eight, past “Why Me,” was called “I Gave Everything (That a Girl in Love Should Never Give).” Written by Marty Robbins. Behind them: George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, Tanya Tucker, Don Gibson, Tom T. Hall, Charlie Rich, Johnny Paycheck, Johnny Rodriguez, the Earl Scruggs Revue. Marty closed his set with “El Paso.” Loretta pulled Conway out for “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.” Then the two of them came back out and sang the show off, the same way they’d started it.

HE SAID IT WASN’T PERFECT — IT SAID NOTHING ABOUT MAMA, TRAINS, TRUCKS, PRISON OR GETTING DRUNK. ONE MORE VERSE, AND IT HIT NO.8. Two songwriters sat in a hotel room and decided to poke fun at every country song they’d ever heard. Steve Goodman and John Prine wrote it laughing. When it was finished, Prine wanted his name off it. He thought it was a novelty. He didn’t want to insult the country crowd. Goodman put it on his 1971 debut album. Almost nobody noticed. Then David Allan Coe heard it. Goodman told him it was the perfect country and western song. Coe wrote back and said it couldn’t be — not one word about mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting drunk. So Goodman sat down and wrote one more verse with all five in it. Coe cut it on August 20, 1974. Five minutes and sixteen seconds. It climbed to No.8 — the first Top Ten of his career. Goodman wasn’t laughing when he first heard what Coe did with that last verse. He carried it straight to Kris Kristofferson. Prine never took a dollar. So Goodman spent part of his own royalties on a 1942 Wurlitzer jukebox and handed it to him. Prine filled it with old 78s and kept it in the corner of his Nashville office. In October 2023, his family carried it into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
