He tried several nonmusical jobs before heading to Nashville for another chance. That was where Cowboy Jack Clement entered the story. Clement signed Williams to his publishing company as a songwriter. Don began recording simple demos with Clement and producer Allen Reynolds, hoping other singers would cut his songs. But other artists weren’t interested enough. So Clement, Reynolds and Williams made a simple decision: if nobody else wanted to record the songs, Don would sing them himself. That decision changed everything. “The Shelter of Your Eyes” reached No. 14. “Come Early Morning” climbed to No. 12. Then “We Should Be Together” became his first Top Five country hit. In 1974, “I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me” gave Williams his first No. 1. He would eventually collect 17 No. 1 country hits. But Don Williams’ solo career began almost by accident — because the songs he was trying to give away ended up sounding better in the quiet voice singing the demos.
