Josh Turner was driving out of Nashville with an Ernest Tubb record playing in the truck when an idea began taking shape. That idea eventually became a song Josh Turner would write and record with John Anderson, a singer Josh Turner had admired long before the two became friends.
The recording playing that day was a live Ernest Tubb album from 1965. Recalling the experience in a June 2021 interview with Entertainment Focus, Josh Turner explained that listening to the music brought an old description of country music as a form of blues back to mind. From there came the phrase that would become the song’s title: “White Noise.”
Writing With a Musical Hero
Josh Turner and John Anderson sat down and developed the idea together. Looking back, Josh Turner thought “White Noise” might have been the first song the two had written together. That small qualification matters: Josh Turner was recalling a collaboration from years earlier, rather than identifying a documented first.
The memory remained a happy one. Josh Turner described the finished song as energetic and remembered enjoying performances of it on the road.
When explaining the relationship behind the collaboration, Josh Turner put the history into one sentence:
“John has been a friend of mine for a long time and a hero for even longer.”
Two Names on the Same Record
“White Noise” appeared on Josh Turner’s 2006 album Your Man, with John Anderson joining the recording as a vocalist. The partnership reached listeners in two ways: Josh Turner and John Anderson shared the songwriting credit, and fans could hear both voices performing the result.
Your Man also featured appearances by Ralph Stanley and members of Diamond Rio. Those collaborations placed established country voices inside an album that became a major step forward for Josh Turner. In the announcement for the album’s fifteenth-anniversary edition, Josh Turner remembered that period as one filled with personal and professional firsts, including a first No. 1 album and single.
Among those milestones was a recording made with John Anderson. A listener could discover “White Noise” through Josh Turner’s album and hear one of Josh Turner’s own influences singing alongside the younger artist.
Choosing the Right Song to Sing Together Again
The recording partnership continued in 2020 with Country State of Mind. Produced by Kenny Greenberg, the album celebrated music that had helped shape Josh Turner’s singing. John Anderson joined Josh Turner for a new version of “I’ve Got It Made,” a John Anderson hit from 1993.
The choice had a specific reason. In a July 2020 interview, Josh Turner explained that “Seminole Wind” would have been an obvious possibility. But Josh Turner understood how closely that song belonged to John Anderson’s Florida roots and the heritage of the place John Anderson came from.
Josh Turner wanted material that felt personally believable to sing. “I’ve Got It Made” offered that connection, and Kenny Greenberg loved the song as well.
That decision reveals the care behind the collaboration. Admiring John Anderson’s catalog meant considering the stories inside the songs, along with the familiar melodies.
A Friendship Preserved in the Recordings
The two collaborations capture different parts of the same relationship. On Your Man, Josh Turner and John Anderson performed something the two had written together. On Country State of Mind, Josh Turner revisited a song from John Anderson’s own recording history, with John Anderson participating again.
The earlier song began with Josh Turner listening to Ernest Tubb while leaving Nashville. By the time “White Noise” reached an album, another country music hero had become part of the recording—and part of a friendship Josh Turner was still talking about fifteen years later.
