Outside Williamsburg, Missouri, Highway 70 was under construction and traffic had been squeezed down to one lane. A drunk driver hit them head-on. Six people in the two cars were killed. Ira died at the scene, one mile east of town. He was 41. Anne was 38 and died on the way to the hospital. At that moment, there was a warrant out for Ira’s own arrest — for driving drunk. That night, Charlie was standing on a stage in West Virginia. He kept singing the old Louvin songs for the next forty-five years. In 2001 the Louvin Brothers were voted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, thirty-six years too late for Ira to hear it. Charlie died in 2011, at 83.
